Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson believes that defender Ryan Fredericks delivered his best game in a West Ham shirt to date in the 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.
The Hammers picked up another three points in the league on their penultimate game of the season and are finishing strongly.
Marko Arnautovic scored a goal in each half at the London Stadium to end his drought, as he had not netted previously since January.
Fredericks then put the icing on the cake with his second-half goal and he burst into the penalty area before a low-driven finish past Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
The 26-year-old defender only joined West Ham last summer on a free transfer after leaving Fulham and has had his campaign disrupted by a mix of injuries and form.
But the right-back has looked more settled in the past couple of months and will hope to build on that next season.
Thompson was impressed by the English full-back at the weekend against the Saints following his goal.
“Ryan Fredericks who gets the third goal, I thought that was the best game I’ve seen him have,” Thompson said on tv channel Sky Sports News (5:20pm, 4 May).
“He had a good attitude. It was a special goal for him because you could see by all the players they were jumping on him [after his goal].”
It looks like Fredericks will get another chance next season to cement his spot in Manuel Pellegrini’s preferred XI and he’s shown glimpses that he could be a success at the London Stadium.
He’s got the perfect teammate to learn from in the shape of veteran teammate Pablo Zabaleta and he needs to pick his brain as much as possible.
Fredericks has blistering pace and he can make a difference going forward, while he just needs to tighten up slightly defensively and adjust to top-flight football.
