Phil Thompson comments on Tyrone Mings’ injury ahead of Aston Villa trip to Sheffield United

Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson has predicted Aston Villa to suffer another loss, at the hands of fellow promoted club Sheffield United this weekend.

He says the injury to Tyrone Mings is a major blow to a Villa side who are out of the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

Thompson said: “Sheffield United are enjoying their time in the Premier League and have a great set of lads who believe in each other, as well as the manager. He has them motivated for all games, not just when the big boys come to town, whether they are home or away – they have to stay focused.

“I have total respect for everything they stand for. With the injury to Tyrone Mings, it is another kick in the teeth for Aston Villa. There is nothing better than Sheffield United getting at the heart of defences and they will do that here. I think Villa might score, but Sheffield United will edge it. 2-1.”

Sheffield United do not boast a player of the same individual talent of Jack Grealish but their success has been built on a clear team ethic.

Villa’s summer splurge has meant that they don’t have the same familiarity, unity and spirit as Sheffield United and rely slightly too much on Grealish for creativity right now.
