Phil Thompson comments on Arsenal star linked with Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly in the race to sign Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, and Anfield icon Phil Thompson has applauded the Gunners skipper on Sky Sports’ website for his stunning form – despite facing adversity.

Aubameyang, 30, has been in stunning form for Arsenal once again. The former Borussia Dortmund star scored 20 goals in 32 league and cup appearances, before the global health crisis put a stop to all proceedings.

The striker’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2021, and that has seen Aubameyang strongly linked with a move to Barcelona or PSG. Football website 90Min claim there is interest from England, with Chelsea and Liverpool keen.

Amid reported interest from Liverpool, Reds legend Thompson raved over the Gunners captain – stating that he has been impressed by the striker’s ability to continue his excellent strike rate, despite the likes of Granit Xhaka behind him.

“On the left is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang,” Thompson said, after naming Aubameyang in his team of the season. “To score the goals he has done for Arsenal, in very difficult times, is a testament to his goalscoring ability.

“If you are leading the way with the likes of Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi, who are not the most creative behind you, it says everything for the amount of goals he scores. He needs to be in my side.”

TBR’s view – Would Aubameyang improve Liverpool?

Klopp worked with Aubameyang at Dortmund and that spell with the German club increased the Gabonese star’s reputation. There is no doubt he would improve Liverpool, but where would he start?

Sadio Mane is in the form of his life, while Roberto Firmino is pivotal to the way Liverpool play. Mo Salah has also been excellent, but if you were to pick one player to replace with Aubameyang, it would be Salah.

It remains to be seen how much Arsenal will charge for the forward, who cost £56million (BBC).
