'Phenomenal': Merson hails £70m-valued star Liverpool and Spurs could land for free

Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have been linked with Antonio Rudiger in recent months, the Chelsea star set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

Paul Merson believes the Germany international is “definitely leaving”, and his current club may have to pay between £60million and £70million to replace him.

Eurosport reported in October that Spurs and Liverpool are amongst the Premier League clubs looking at the Blues star.

However, Antonio Conte’s Tottenham and Jurgen Klopp’s Reds would have a fight on their hands, as Manchester City are also apparently eyeing the defender.

Rudiger has become a key part of his club’s line-up, helping his side win the Champions League last season.

Thomas Tuchel’s appointment saw the 28-year-old return to prominence after being linked with a move away the previous summer.

However, Rudiger is in the final 12 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and negotiations are yet to yield a breakthrough.

Merson, writing in the Daily Star, believes his departure is now a foregone conclusion, and there will be plenty of teams eager to snap him up.

“Chelsea are going to miss Antonio Rudiger when he goes because it will take £60-70m to replace him,” wrote Merson.

“Rudiger is definitely leaving. If he wanted to sign a new contract he would have done it by now. There’s no chance he stays now.

“But it’s not Tuchel’s fault. I think he made his mind up to go when Frank Lampard had him out of the team.

“And even though he’s been phenomenal since Tuchel brought him back in, and they won the Champions League, Rudiger hasn’t forgotten.

“Teams will be queuing round the block now to sign him, and someone will pay him a lorryload of money to join them.”
