Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli has been exceptional this season but he really struggled for once last night as his side were held to a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Newcastle United proved to be a tough nut to crack for Mikel Arteta’s men and put in a resilient defensive display.

There were some key battles all over the pitch, with Bukayo Saka facing off against Dan Burn, while Kieran Trippier managed to keep Martinelli relatively quiet.

The 21-year-old has undoubtedly been a standout performer in north London this season but had a rare off night as he lost the ball more often than any of his teammates.

Martinelli struggled

The Telegraph reports that Martinelli lost the ball 20 times throughout the match, while Trippier regained possession seven times.

It was an intriguing match-up between the pair and while Newcastle defended deep, Trippier dealt with the Brazilian’s threat admirably.

Martinelli has terrorised opposition defences this season, with his pace and trickery often bamboozling full-backs.

But the youngster couldn’t find enough space to run into last night and was often receiving the ball in deeper areas of the pitch.

The Brazilian winger is undoubtedly at his best when he is able to face defenders up one-on-one and create half a yard to either shoot or deliver a ball into the box.

Newcastle’s deep defensive line thwarted his threat and while Trippier undoubtedly won the battle between the pair, he was helped by his teammates.

Arteta won’t be too concerned after a bad night at the office for Martinelli as he’s been consistently brilliant this season. As a younger player, he’s bound to have the odd night where he just isn’t at the races.
