Peterborough United’s co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has joked on social media that Leeds United should be trying to sign forward Ivan Toney.
Toney, 24, is a highly-rated striker that impressed last season in the English League One division and he was previously at Newcastle United.
The centre-forward scored 26 goals in 39 games across all competitions and that has lead to their being reported interest in him already in this current summer window.
According to the Daily Record, Scottish giants Celtic are interested in signing the Englishman and are trying to agree a transfer fee for him.
Senior Boro man MacAnthony has previously suggested this week that Toney’s future may be elsewhere.
““He’s with us right now, but he might not be tomorrow. That’s the way it goes. We plan for life without him and we’re on a mission. Good luck if he goes, if he stays – great,” he said, as quoted by Boro’s official Youtube account.
MacAnthony has now suggested on his Twitter that perhaps Leeds should join the race for him in a tongue-in-cheek comment.
TBR’s View:
Toney is an impressive young striker that can score a variety of different goals and it looks like realistically he could be on the move this summer, especially with comments surfacing from Boro’s co-owner MacAnthony.
Leeds desperately need competition for current striker Patrick Bamford in the squad and they are entering the Premier League season with just one senior forward, so it’s vital someone arrives imminently at Elland Road.
Despite Toney’s potential, it looks like the Premier League would be a step too far and he may be more suited to a spell in the Championship, or testing himself in Scotland like reports suggest.
