Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has taken to Twitter to explain that his club discussed the possibility of selling Jack Marriott to Leeds with Victor Orta last summer.
As per MacAnthony’s official Twitter account, during the time when Barry Fry and Orta were discussing the loan deal to take youngster Tyler Denton from Elland Road to the Posh, Marriott’s name popped up.
He went on to say that it was clear that Leeds were going in a different direction with their striking targets, and of course they went on to sign Patrick Bamford up front last summer.
The merits of that decision can be questioned. The BBC report that the Bamford deal could rise to a value of £10 million, and his fitness and form was patchy, scoring 10 goals across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports report that Derby went on to sign Marriott for an initial £3 million, which can rise to £5 million and he went on to score 12 across all tournaments, while often being used as a supersub.
Marriott did net two goals against Leeds as they were dumped out of the play-offs and it’s also tempting to consider how a player of his speed and skill would have got on in Marcelo Bielsa’s system – for half the price of Bamford.
It’s the Derby man who looks the better prospect – he was also cheaper – and it would be interesting to see which player Leeds fans would rather have leading their line next season…
