Peter Taylor has told Love Sport Radio that he is “surprised” that Tottenham Hotspur have opted to relocate to their new stadium before the end of the season.

Tottenham have announced that they will be finally moving into the new ground on April 3, when they host Crystal Palace in the Premier League. It comes after they were originally supposed to move in at the beginning of the season.

But setbacks have forced Spurs to wait until they can move. It has seen the overall cost of the new ground reach an astounding £850million. The north Londoners will now be able to play their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City at their new home.

Former Tottenham winger Taylor – who played 123 times for the north Londoners between 1976 and 1980 – believes Spurs are making a mistake, and should have moved in at the end of the season.

“I’m a little bit surprised that they’re going back at this time,” Taylor said. “I thought they might go back at the beginning of next season to be consistent with all the teams in the Premier League.

“When you’ve got Arsenal up the road and other clubs that are all of a sudden getting an extra 10,000 people in, you’ve got to do it. Fair play to Tottenham for their planning. I think it will really help Tottenham kick on.”

TBR’s view

Given that Tottenham have been planning on moving to the new ground for the entire campaign, it seems harsh that now they are finally set to relocate, they come under criticism for it.

Yes, perhaps it is a bit unfair on other Premier League sides. But Spurs have been served a disadvantage by having to play at Wembley for almost two seasons. It is as though they have been without a home.

Now, Spurs fans who have given up on following their club at Wembley can now attend matches at the new ground.
