Peter Schmeichel suggests Tottenham stopper Joe Hart should be in his prime

Former Premier League goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has questioned England’s goalkeeping options to Goal, suggesting Tottenham stopper Joe Hart should still be playing.

The ex-Manchester United ace knows a thing or two about goalkeeping but he thinks England have lacked a No.1 since David Seaman retired.

Under Jose Mourinho he has been used as the deputy to Hugo Lloris, playing in Europa League games against Shkendija and Maccabi Haifa.

Schmeichel has been discussing England’s goalkeeping options and has included Hart in the discussion.

He told Goal: “When was the last time England had a No.1?

“Joe Hart is still playing. Why is he not the No.1? Hart is only 33-years-old. He’s probably in his prime.

“The question, for me, would probably be answered with David Seaman. He’s probably the last No.1 England had.”

Hart has probably lost his way since being offloaded by Manchester City when Pep Guardiola arrived in English football.

He spent time on loan with Torino and did okay, whilst a spell with West Ham didn’t prove quite so fruitful.

At Burnley he couldn’t force his way past Nick Pope – who is now also on the radar with England, playing against Wales last week.

Hart looked pretty good in the two games he has played for Tottenham and seems to have some confidence back under Mourinho.

Some of the criticism thrown at Hart has been untoward and perhaps some respect is needed on his name.

The goalkeeper helped City to their first-ever Premier League title and departed the Etihad with 348 appearances to his name.

His England days might be over but Hart is still a solid custodian.
