Peter Schmeichel hammers Jose Mourinho for what he did after Tottenham exit

Peter Schmeichel has told CBS Sports that Sir Alex Ferguson would never have gone into the opposing side’s changing room and applauded the other team – after Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho was caught on camera, clapping the Dinamo Zagreb team.

Despite going into the match with a 2-0 first-leg advantage thanks to a brace from Harry Kane, Spurs suffered a 3-0 defeat to Zagreb in Croatia after extra-time – as Mislav Orsic took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored a brilliant hat-trick.

All three goals were sensational, as Zagreb proved defensively solid and kept the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Gareth Bale at bay. It is a shock exit for Tottenham, and a dismal blow to what has been a pretty poor 2020-21 campaign anyway.

A video has emerged on Twitter of Mourinho entering the Slavia dressing room and applauding his opponents – but Manchester United legend Schmeichel has hammered him, claiming it would never have happened with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“If that was my manager, doing that after the game, and I was part of what happened there, I’d be seriously cross,” Schmeichel said. “He’s got to go back to his dressing room and do whatever a manager does behind closed doors.

“He’s playing up to social media, detaching himself from the events. He should be in the dressing room, talking to his players and make sure they understand what has just happened is unacceptable. You would never see Sir Alex Ferguson do that.”

TBR’s view – Mourinho has other matters to attend to

Forget praising the side that have just ruined your current season, Mourinho needs to be in the Tottenham changing room hammering his players – rather than applauding Zagreb. The sack is growing closer, especially after Thursday’s result.

A Carabao Cup final will not save Mourinho. The last 16 of the Europa League and failure to finish in the top four should see Daniel Levy take action. He needs to focus saving what has been a car crash of a season, given the backing he received.
