Peter Schmeichel believes Manchester United were wrong to replace Rasmus Hojlund with Benjamin Sesko, describing the decision as “weird”.
Napoli striker Rasmus Hojlund hasn’t looked back since leaving Old Trafford during the summer, scoring four goals in six games this season.
His move will be made permanent at the end of the campaign after a £38million obligation to buy clause was included, a fee significantly lower than the £72m United paid Atalanta in 2023.
Benjamin Sesko was brought in as Hojlund’s big-name replacement and has scored two goals in his last two club outings, but Peter Schmeichel says the transfer should never have happened.

Rasmus Hojlund is a 25-goal-a-year striker
Speaking on the Sacked in the Morning podcast, the United legend said: “You have people deciding on who is coming in. So, for instance, I have nothing bad about Benjamin Sesko.
“But the signing of him was a little bit weird to me because we have Rasmus Hojlund, who has been starved of service for two years.
“And we only have to see what he’s doing now at Napoli. When he gets someone like Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with, all of a sudden, he’s scoring goals.
“I have consistently said this for two and a half years. I have consistently said that this guy, Rasmus Hojlund, will be a 25-a-year goal scorer for United. But he needs service. You need to play him in.”
Hojlund has certainly taken on a new lease of life under Antonio Conte in Naples and has already matched the tally of Premier League goals he scored for United last season.
He also linked up with his former Old Trafford team-mate Scott McTominay, and the duo have dovetailed to superb effect this campaign, perhaps proving United were wrong to let them go.

Paul Scholes says United should have kept Rasmus Hojlund
Paul Scholes recently took an identical stance to Schmeichel, also claiming United made a mistake in selling Hojlund and buying Sesko.
“You look at Rasmus Hojlund, 22-year-old kid, came when he was 20 years of age,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
“One centre-forward for Manchester United and everything was on him, the pressure was on him and he couldn’t handle it. He should be coming in and out of the team. There should be three or four centre-forwards there.
“This summer, what do they do? They let him go and they buy another one, very similar, exactly the same! 22 years of age. He’s started OK, he looks like he’s getting better. But where’s the common sense in that?”
