Peter Schmeichel has told BeIN Sports that Tottenham Hotspur’s new pitch was to blame for Harry Kane’s ankle injury, which may keep the striker out of action until the end of the season.
Kane, 25, came off the field of play in the second half as Tottenham shocked Manchester City with a 1-0 win. Son Heung-min scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute.
Kane flew into a challenge with England teammate Fabian Delph, as he looked to block the Manchester City star’s clearance. He immediately knew he had suffered an ankle injury.
It has since been claimed by Mauricio Pochettino that he could miss the rest of the season. Schmeichel believes Tottenham’s new pitch is the reason for Kane’s injury.
“This is only the third game that has been played on that pitch,” Schmeichel said. “We’ve seen players tonight slide a little bit. The pitch is not maybe 100 per cent there.
“I think it is wrong of Kane to be out there in the first place. But that is what he does, he’s such a hard worker. He should be further up the pitch.”
Schmeichel’s claim about the pitch could hold some truth. Players were spotted slipping throughout the match and Kane certainly slips as he goes into the challenge, which sees his ankle buckle.
Without Kane, Spurs will certainly struggle. Two huge tests against Manchester City await in the Premier League and away in the Champions League second leg.
Though they have a 1-0 advantage, losing Kane could make the tie a lot closer.
