Peter Crouch says Steven Gerrard would be a ‘terrific appointment’ for Newcastle

Former Liverpool and England forward, Peter Crouch, has said that Newcastle would be getting themselves a top class manager if they can manage to appoint Rangers coach, Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard is one of a number of names being mentioned in regards to replacing Steve Bruce at Newcastle. Yesterday’s loss to Tottenham could well spell the end of the experienced coach’s time in the Northeast.

The Liverpool legend won the league title with the Gers last term, ending Celtic’s reign at the top in Scotland. And Crouch, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, admits he can see why the Toon are eyeing up Gerrard.

“He is the only player I’ve dedicated an entire chapter to in my books — I have so much admiration and respect for him. He became this awe-inspiring leader and, if I am honest, impressing Stevie felt more important than doing so with the manager. I wanted him to rate me,” Crouch wrote.

“That Newcastle are casting glances in his direction is no surprise at all. Approaching Stevie is a complete no-brainer. If I’m a Newcastle fan, I’d love somebody like Stevie to come in. Stevie would be a terrific appointment. But how far away is real success at Newcastle — and I mean silverware — and how does that impact on the Liverpool job? These are huge questions he must ask himself if the interest in him becomes serious over the coming days.”

Gerrard is said to be among the leading contenders, per reports this morning in the media. So far, he’s not hinted he is ready to leave Rangers.

He did admit last week he is interested in what’s happening at Newcastle.

TBR’s View: Big risk for Gerrard to take Newcastle

Crouch definitely hits the nail on the head here with Gerrard and Newcastle. There’s no doubt he can bring success, but there is also a big risk for a relatively inexperienced manager here.

Newcastle might be better bringing in someone who has that experience in the short-term. Gerrard, as Crouch writes, risks his Rangers legacy a bit by moving to Tyneside.

Liverpool is the end goal for Gerrard. If he takes the Newcastle job, then there is a definite risk that he might not be willing to take.
