Peter Crouch lambasts 'awful' Tottenham player after dismal Mura loss
Peter Crouch has told BT Sport that Davinson Sanchez went to “sleep” against NS Mura on Thursday night – labelling his defending as “awful”.
Tottenham’s chances of qualifying from the Europa Conference League took an embarrassing turn for the worse – with a 2-1 defeat in Slovenia.
That is, despite Antonio Conte fielding a side that consisted of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Oliver Skipp. They were dismal.
Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in his comeback game, while Colombia international Sanchez was turned inside out for both Mura goals.
On 11 minutes, Tomi Horvat simply cut inside and it left Sanchez on the deck – curling an effort into the corner. It happened again for the winner.
This time, it was Amadej Morosa, cutting inside before shooting – and the deflection off of Sanchez looped over Pierluigi Gollini. Crouch responded.
“He wants to cut inside him, because he did it in the first half,” Crouch said, in his analysis on BT Sport. “He goes to sleep.
“He tries to shepherd him down the line. As soon as he cuts inside, I said he’ll go. Awful defending, that’s two goals because of him.”
Crouch on Sanchez: Tottenham star is in danger of being offloaded
He could easily be Conte’s first casualty. Tottenham have adopted a three-man defence under Conte, with Eric Dier the heartbeat of it.
With all available, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies have started either side of him. It leaves Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga as cover.
On Sunday, with Romero in need of replacing, Tanganga was preferred to Sanchez. Rodon played in the middle, and is seen as cover for Dier.
So, Sanchez was used as cover for Davies on the left. But he was woeful, and he is third choice in the other positions. So, surely, Sanchez could be sold?
On Thursday’s showing, Conte has got to be on the phone to Fabio Paratici to tell him a new left-sided defender is needed – and Sanchez needs to go.
