Peter Crouch hammers Newcastle star signed by Rafa Benitez

Peter Crouch has hammered Newcastle United attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron on BBC One’s Match of the Day 2 (Sunday, 10.30pm), claiming it is “terrible” that he is yet to score or create for The Toon.

Almiron, 25, joined Newcastle in January after winning the MLS Cup with Atlanta United – where he scored 13 and created the same amount in the 2018 campaign. But since his move to Tyneside, he has struggled.

The 20-time Paraguay international has shown plenty of speed and skill, but he is yet to find the back of the net despite having a golden chance against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday during the 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park.

Crouch believes Almiron has something about him, but stated that the fact he is yet to be involved in a goal despite making 20 appearances for The Toon is “terrible reading” for a player who cost Newcastle and Mike Ashley £20million (BBC).

“Almiron has got something, he has got something,” Crouch said. “But he hasn’t scored or given an assist since he has been at the football club. That’s terrible reading for an attacking player.”

TBR’s view – Newcastle must hope that first one opens floodgates

Steve Bruce would be making the right decision by keeping Almiron in the side. The goal – or even an assist – is coming. Almiron has shown plenty of invention and speed, but it is his decision making that is slightly off.

When he does get that goal, which Almiron was inches away of finally clutching, the floodgates will open and fans will finally see why Rafa Benitez implored the Toon board to land the South American ace.
