'Persuasion': Club chief says he just convinced Arsenal's Edu to sell 26-year-old for £10m cheaper

Turkish giants Galatasaray have finally signed Lucas Torreira from Arsenal after an extended period of negotiations.

Galatasaray Vice President Erden Timur has been quoted by the club’s official website talking about how he got the Gunners to drop their price.

He said that the Gunners started negotiations at 18 million euros (£15.2 million) but Fabrizio Romano says that the initial fee they ended up getting could be as low as 6 million euros (£5.1 million).

There are apparently add-ons in the deal which has the 26-year-old to Turkey but it seems patience has paid off for Galatasaray.

He said: “We have been trying the persuasion process for 20-25 days.

“The salary (Torreira will) receive is lower than the salary some are offered. We are definitely not crossing the limit of our budget. We are at roughly the same level as last year’s budget, without taking into account what is still to be done.

“We are making efforts through many persuasions to convince players to come at a lower level than they expected in terms of numbers. That’s why the players’ persuasion process takes more than 20 days. Arsenal started with 18 million euros. It fell to 15 at most.

“For 20 days, the figure never fell. Sometimes patience is required. With us, it’s the opposite. There’s no patience around here. I was saying that in the end, these things will come to a different point. Lucas said I’m coming 2 days before I left.”

There will be two schools of thought about what Arsenal have done here.

Some will be pleased that they have done what needed to be done in order to get a player Mikel Arteta was not going to use out of the club.

The finances in the Premier League are such that not many other teams can afford to even sign their outcasts without some compromise on both sides.

But others will say that Arsenal will continue to be low-balled by potential suitors if they know the Gunners will eventually crack and drop their asking price by around £10 million.
