Perry Groves makes bold statement about 'brilliant' Arsenal linked defender

Former Arsenal forward Perry Groves has told TalkSPORT that in Ben White the Gunners are making a statement of intent ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Brighton centre-back is set for a medical with the Gunners. If successful he will complete a £50 million transfer from the AMEX Stadium to the Emirates.

White was part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2020 final earlier this month. He didn’t get on the pitch during the tournament but will have benefitted from the experience.

Now, he looks set to make a big-money move and Groves believes he could become even better than England’s central defensive duo at Euro 2020.

THE MOST UNDERRATED PLAYER IN WORLD FOOTBALL

He told TalkSPORT: “He’s English, he’s young, he’s only 23 and he’s proven that he can play in the Premier League.

“Three seasons ago, Arsenal played Leeds. I watched him then and thought, he’s a player we should be in for.

” He’s good on the ball and he’s brilliant at bringing it out from the back.

“As a centre-half, I think he has the ability to be better than Harry Maguire and John Stones from what I’ve seen.

“From an Arsenal perspective, £50 million, happy days. It’s a statement of intent.”

Ambitious claim by Groves: Arsenal fans should be excited over White

Some fans won’t be happy that the Gunners are forking out £50 million for the Brighton man but in today’s inflated market, they could actually be getting a steal.

At 23 White has plenty of potential and he’s already got a season of Premier League football under his belt.

Arsenal have been comical at the back on occasions under Arteta. As a result, it’s no surprise to see him target a new central defender.

White fits the profile of a defender capable of playing how the boss wants his team to operate. He is comfortable at bringing the ball out from the back and that will surely help the Gunners.

Whether he can become better than the £80m signing, Maguire and Stones remains to be seen. It’s fair to say he should prove a decent addition to the ranks, however.
