Former Tottenham assistant manager Steffen Freund has heaped praise on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg during an interview with the club’s official website.

The midfield maestro signed for Tottenham in the summer from Southampton, costing the club £15 million (Sky Sports).

Hojbjerg has proved a revelation starting all 22 matches in the Premier League, becoming a real lynchpin in Jose Mourinho’s team.

He made 134 appearances for the Saints prior to checking in at Spurs and his impact has been refreshing, to say the least.

Freund believes the 25-year-old is ‘perfect’ for Tottenham and waxed lyrical about his influence.

He told the club’s official website: “I love to see his quality. He’s improved so much without the ball and works so hard.

“That’s why the supporters love him, it’s just a pity they’re not in the stadium to see his performances.

“The Premier League is perfect for him. He has a fantastic attitude, works so hard and he will give everything to win, a little bit like me in the past!”

Hojbjerg was part of a relatively successful recruitment drive in the summer and Mourinho will hope his good form continues.

He has played 33 times for Spurs in total and has been one of the standout performers during 2020/21.

It’s fair to say that the jury was out over the Dane before he’d kicked a ball in the white of Tottenham.

Plenty of supporters would have preferred a bigger name to bolster their midfield ranks.

It hasn’t taken him long to win the fan base around though.

Earning £101,000-a-week and signing for a relatively small £15 million, Hojbjerg looks like money well spent.

Tottenham will hold ambitions of winning silverware and with the 38-cap midfielder in their team, they stand an excellent chance of doing so.
