Leeds United’s Under-23 side held out for a 2-1 win over Newcastle United’s reserves at Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon as the Whites welcomed back Robin Koch – but it was a moment from Charlie Cresswell that caught adulation from fans on Twitter.

Having had a week off, the 23’s returned to action – having last beaten Wolves 2-0 away from home at Kidderminster Harriers’ stadium. Rodrigo scored both goals, but it was a Germany international that made his comeback on Monday afternoon.

Koch played 45 minutes in the number four position, while Gaetano Berardi and Ian Poveda also got a half of football as the trio continued their returns from injury. Koch has been injured since early December, having undergone knee surgery.

Leeds took the lead as Joe Gelhardt won and scored a penalty, before his corner was headed home by 18-year-old Cresswell. Christian Atsu, a 65-time Ghana international, got one back for the Toon but the scoreline remained the same throughout.

During the first half, Cresswell produced a moment of absolute brilliant as he stepped out of the defence to use some excellent skill and beat two Toon players – including a turn that Zinedine Zidane made famous. Leeds fans have reacted to that moment.
