David Luiz has not made the best of starts at new club Arsenal.
The Brazilian transferred in the summer from Chelsea for a fee in the region of £8 million (Sky Sports), much to the surprise of followers of the Premier League.
Luiz’s move was widely praised by Gunners supporters given the fee involved, but so far things haven’t gone well.
The 32-year-old was suspect against Burnley on his debut, was run ragged at Anfield by Liverpool and gave away a silly penalty, and against Tottenham Hotspur he again struggled.
Fans will be expecting much more from the South American now that he’s had time to settle, and one man confident he can get back to is best, is Per Mertesacker.
The former Gunners defender, who is now overseeing the academy, told Sky Sports: “I think he will learn from his mistakes on the pitch, but he is very comfortable being at Arsenal.
“That’s what I have been seeing. So we are happy to have him.
“He brings something different to the table right now. So I think he is able to learn and excel his level of being an Arsenal player.”
Arsenal fans will hope Luiz can iron out the errors as Mertesacker says he will.
So far he has looked like the David Luiz that first turned up in English football with Chelsea in 2011.
It’s been surprising to see him making the mistakes he has, when he had been fairly reliable in his second spell with the Blues.
