Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has waxed lyrical about Phil Foden ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a sensational season for the Citizens, registering 14 goals and nine assists from 41 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Foden has been increasingly influential in recent weeks, standing out in the Champions League quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund.

And on Wednesday night, he once again delivered a superb performance as the Citizens came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the Premier League.

Foden finished a smart move to draw City level and was a constant thorn in the Villa defenders’ side en route to a win which moved City 11 points clear at the top.

Now, attention turns to the League Cup final, with Ryan Mason’s Tottenham Hotspur standing in the way at Wembley.

Foden shone in last season’s final against Villa, and Guardiola has spoken of how much he’s improved and got stronger since then, though he says there’s still room for improvement.

“He played more minutes and when you play more minutes you are a better player,” Guardiola told the City media team.

“He was a boy when I arrived, training every day with these guys and now he plays important minutes.

“He is stronger physically. He can get stronger. He plays more minutes, knows the game better and can play more positions.

“He is a better player but he can still be better.”

Foden’s masterclass last year heralded the arrival of a new superstar in English football, and it’s frightening to see just how much he’s developed since then.

But obviously, when you consider he’s still just 20 and has years to go before he hits his peak, you can’t help but think there’s a bona fide superstar in the making.
