Manchester City have completed the signing of Barcelona goalkeeper and Chile captain Claudio Bravo. The 33-year-old has signed a four year contract after the switch was completed, with the fee believed to be in the region of £17 million.
Bravo’s signing is a real statement for Pep Guardiola, who opted to drop Joe Hart to the bench and search for a goalkeeper who is better with the ball at his feet. With Bravo, who had an 84.3% pass completion rate in 2015/16, he has the best goalkeeper around in regards to that aspect of his game.
A Copa America winner in 2015 and 2016, Bravo was restricted to La Liga matches in Barcelona following his 2014 switch from Real Sociedad as he vied for position with Marc Andre ter Stegen. Now, Bravo will be Guardiola’s first choice ahead of Willy Caballero, who has taken up the role so far this season.
A superb shot stopper and one of the most dominant goalkeepers in Europe, Bravo will put the next piece of the puzzle into the Guardiola jigsaw by playing out from the back and starting attacking moves from deep. Bravo will now be expected to make his debut on Sunday at the Etihad as the Citizens host Slaven Bilic’s West Ham United.
The move also opens up the path for England goalkeeper Joe Hart to leave the club. Hart is said to prefer a loan move given the short time frame he has to decide his future, but the club are open to a permanent switch, with Everton the favourites. Binned by Guardiola due to his lack of quality with the ball at his feet after a number of errors with England at Euro 2016, Hart will want to rebuild his career as soon as possible.
