Well, some of you may be experiencing a case of déjà vu.

Over a decade after Chelsea pinched another Liverpool No.9 – Fernando Torres – in a shock £50m deal, the Blues made another attempt to rob the Reds of a talismanic figure, according to The Times.

It is said that Chelsea enquired about Nunez after hearing rumours within the football industry that Liverpool may consider a sale, after the Uruguay international scored just nine Premier League goals in his debut campaign at Anfield.

These whispers within the business suggested that Liverpool were exploring a swap deal with Atlético Madrid for the £113m man Joao Felix.

However, Chelsea quickly found out the falsity of these rumours, as Liverpool swiftly rebuffed the enquiry.

Nunez has since blossomed into a highly effective striker this season, scoring 13 goals while also providing 11 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Liverpool were right to stand by Darwin Nunez

Despite coming in for some criticism at times throughout his first season at Liverpool, Nunez was always a problem for defenders, and the South American’s efforts are now starting to pay off as he becomes more clinical.

It would have been easy for Liverpool to accept a profit on the £140,000-a-week striker and move on to someone with a better goal record, although the Reds clearly see a lot of potential in the Uruguayan, and that faith is starting to be rewarded.
