Ross Barkley underperformed in a big match again

There have been a lot of rumours regarding Ross Barkley’s future as there is believed to be interest from other Premier League clubs. However, he has done little this season to suggest that he is good enough to make a step up to a top-six club.

Despite some flashes of quality such as at home against Manchester City and away to Tottenham, he flatters to deceive more often than not and that was the case on Sunday. He was the main creative presence in the team and his team failed to create many clear-cut chances, especially after Chelsea settled into the game.

This season has been a positive one for the young Englishman. He has recovered after the disappointment of Euro 2016 and delivered some excellent performances. Ronald Koeman has had a hugely positive impact on the 23-year-old and he now has a defined role in the team.

This was something that he lacked under Roberto Martinez and it has allowed him to flourish. The midfielder must now add consistency to his game and become more intelligent in the big matches. He needs at least one more season at Everton before he can make that step up to the top six.
