According to the Mirror, Barcelona have put a £94 million price tag on Ousmane Dembele, as Liverpool are considering launching a move for the 22-year-old wide man.
Dembele has struggled to establish himself at the Camp Nou since his arrival in 2017. However, the 21-cap France international’s quality and huge potential is obvious. Therefore, the La Liga giants won’t let him go cheaply.
Dembele racked up 14 goals and nine assists in 42 appearances last season, but he was not a regular starter and the World Cup winner may need to move on to secure more game time.
Anfield would be the ideal destination for Dembele, from the player’s perspective. Jurgen Klopp is the kind of coach who could get the best out of the winger and the Reds are an ambitious club on the up. However, the fee that Barcelona are demanding should rule out a deal.
The wide areas are not where Liverpool currently need to strengthen. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have earned their starting berths on the flanks for the Reds, and Dembele would struggle to usurp them. Therefore, a move for Dembele would not be the wisest use of such funds.
What’s more, the balance of Liverpool’s squad, especially in the attacking contingent, is currently almost perfect. Adding another big-money signing who would expect regular starts risks upsetting that. Klopp should be doing all he can to protect the harmony in his squad.
Klopp should turn his back on Dembele and take his summer search for reinforcements elsewhere.
