Paul Scholes says Liverpool have a ‘brilliant’ player who’s better than Frenkie De Jong

Paul Scholes very rarely has anything nice to say about Liverpool and their players.

Indeed, as a Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has a natural affinity against the Reds and their star players.

However, speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football, Scholes has been full of praise for one Liverpool player in particular.

Scholes was asked to rank who he believes to be the five best midfielders in world football, and he made space for Alexis Mac Allister in his list.

Scholes put Mac Allister ahead of Frenkie De Jong, claiming that he thinks the Argentine is a ‘brilliant’ player.

Paul Scholes hails Alexis Mac Allister

Scholes picked Mac Allister as one of the best midfielders in world football.

The pundit claimed that Mac Allister is the fourth best midfielder on the planet, stating that he’s better than Barcelona’s De Jong.

“So, Frenkie De Jong, Barcelona. I just think technically, I like watching technical players. I’d have him as number five. I thought he was brilliant against Newcastle last week,’ Scholes said.

“Mac Allister, again, I thought he was brilliant last year for Liverpool. I saw him close up in the game at Old Trafford, as I mentioned before, he was brilliant, controlled everything. I don’t think he’s had a great start to this season”

“So I’ll have Mac Allister at number four.”

Alexis Mac Allister has been compared to Paul Scholes

It’s interesting to hear Scholes hailing Mac Allister in this way, because, not too long ago, the Argentine was compared to Scholes.

Indeed, Jamie Carragher compared Mac Allister to Scholes earlier this season.

“Mac Allister is a bit of an unsung hero in that Liverpool side,” Carragher said.

“He’s a calming influence. He’s like maybe a bit like Paul Scholes from Manchester United – sits in that midfield and just makes other players play better. Really cool, calm and collected in possession.

“I think they’ve missed something in central midfield in a couple of pre-season games, where they’ve looked a little bit vulnerable, and it’s been too easy for the opposition to play through them.”

Scholes was, of course, hugely successful in the Premier League, and Mac Allister is well on his way to emulating that after winning his first league title last season.
