Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has claimed that Rasmus Hojlund has “got to do better” than he did against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
The Old Trafford icon, speaking on TNT Sports, said he felt a lot of the play involving the 20-year-old was “a bit scruffy”.
Man United went into their final Champions League game needing to beat Bayern and hope Galatarasay drew with Copenhagen to qualify for the last 16.
However, the Red Devils – with Hojlund leading the line – failed to make much of an impact against a well-marshalled Bayern back line, and were subsequently knocked out of Europe.
Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae were able to deal with the £72million man with relative ease throughout the game.

By the time the visitors opened the scoring in the 70th minute, Erik ten Hag’s side had only mustered one effort on goal.
“Hojlund has got to do better,” Scholes said on TNT Sports. “There has been a lot of times that the ball has gone to his feet. It’s all a bit scruffy.
“He needs to keep hold of it. It’s not great play and that can lead to counter attacks, so he has to do better.
“You have to say the two Bayern centre-backs have been very good, very aggressive against him. But he has got to be stronger and bring players into play and hopefully build some attacks.”
By the latter stages of the game, Man United were growing frustrated at what they were seeing and urged their team to attack.
However, they couldn’t breach the Bayern backline, which stood firm. Meanwhile, the Red Devils had conceded their 15th Champions League goal midway through the second half.
Harry Kane’s flick on the edge of the box put Kingsley Coman in on goal. The 27-year-old duly took his time to pick his spot and fired home.
Hojlund had done well in the Champions League prior to Tuesday night, getting five goals in the competition including one away at Bayern in September.
However, he barely troubled the – admittedly world-class – opposition defence in the must-win game.
That said, at just 20 years of age, he has plenty of time to get better, and it would help if he got more service from the players around him.
