Paul Scholes has told Amazon Prime Video Sport that he cannot understand why Gini Wijnaldum would want to leave Liverpool next summer – when the Dutchman’s contract currently expires, following Sunday’s win over Wolves.

Wijnaldum, 30, netted in the 4-0 win – curling a beautiful effort into the top corner past Rui Patricio following a delightful assist from Jordan Henderson. However, after the match, Wijnaldum remained tight-lipped over his future at Anfield.

“I already said in my previous interview, I don’t talk about my contract situation, I talk about the game,” Wijnaldum told Amazon Prime. But his future remains in doubt, especially after links to Barcelona emerged in the summer.

Manchester United legend Scholes was working as a pundit for the clash at Anfield and commented on Wijnaldum’s future – asking why the former Newcastle man would want to depart, given he continues to get regular game time.

“Why would he want to leave this place? His team is playing attacking football, he is playing football every week,” Scholes said. “There was a bit of talk about Barcelona in the summer, but why would you want to leave? I think they will win the league again.”

TBR’s view – Liverpool need to keep Wijnaldum

Even if he is kept as a squad player, one that eventually allows Curtis Jones to come in and replace him on a permanent basis. Keeping the Dutch star is crucial as he fits the Liverpool system like a glove.

His experience, his work rate, his ability to score goals at crucial times – a brace against Barcelona, for example – make him one of the club’s best players. If Liverpool have the option, they must do everything in their power to keep Wijnaldum.
