Paul Robinson picks out Gjanni Alioski for Leeds criticism, following Brighton display
Former Leeds United and England goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, has slammed Gjanni Alioski for his latest performance at left-back.
Alioski, who has become a converted full-back under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, had one of his games to forget as he gave away a penalty for another rash decision at the back.
The Macedonian star is clearly better going forward but does his job at left-back, providing energy and tenacity in most games. But he’s also been known to make mistakes, as he did yesterday.
And Robinson, who was speaking on Amazon Prime following the game, pointed out what he believes has been a problem for Leeds all season.
“I think it’s a really soft penalty. I think the left-back has been a problem for Leeds all season. Alioski has been targeted by teams for his defensive incapability, if you like. It was just a really silly mistake by him,” Robinson said.
Stuart Dallas had began the season at left-back for Leeds but such have been his impressive performances in midfield, Bielsa has been left with little choice but to keep him in there.
And in fairness, Leeds had tightened up of late defensively.
TBR View: Alioski could do with being replaced if Leeds are to progress
Leeds cannot continue with putting stop gaps in certain positions, especially if they want to continue to improve.
We see on the right side how good Luke Ayling is both defensively and going forward. Leeds need someone similar on the left side and will be interesting to see if this is an area the club target this summer.
Alioski has done well overall, but yesterday highlighted the issues he can sometimes face.
