Paul Robinson comments on reports that Tottenham could sign Gareth Bale in swap deal

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks to sign Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale but some outlets have claimed that Dele Alli could be included in a deal to bring Bale back to Spurs – and Paul Robinson believes such a deal would make sense.

Bale, 31, has developed the reputation of an outcast at Real Madrid as he remains on the sidelines. The 83-time Wales international is in a tricky position where Real want him gone, but his enormous wages means clubs struggle to afford him.

But that could all be about to change. Bale is being strongly linked with a return to Spurs, with Real ready to subsidise his wages – though a loan or a permanent deal is unlikely. The Telegraph, though, claims a swap could be on the cards.

Indeed, it states that Alli could move to Zinedine Zidane’s side in a swap deal for Bale – despite Alli’s poor form of late in a Spurs shirt. Ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson believes such a swap deal would make sense.

“I read that this morning, I don’t know if that is after the weekend’s performance,” Robinson told Sky Sports News on Wednesday (11am). “Him and Jose don’t see eye to eye, and it would be a deal that could be back to work.

“If Dele doesn’t fit into his squad, and he has the opportunity to bring in Bale at the expense of Alli, then it is a deal that works.”

TBR’s view – Should Spurs wave goodbye to Alli?

On his day, Alli can be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Goals from deep, flair, creativity, he has it all. For the ex-MK Dons midfielder, he just needs confidence, a run of games and some momentum to get back to his previous level.

It must be said that he still had a hand in 15 goals last season despite a difficult season. If the only way to get Bale back to Spurs is to let Alli go to Real, then so be it. But Spurs must pursue every other possible avenue first.
