Paul Merson has insisted that Tottenham are genuine contenders to win the Champions League this season.

Spurs appear to have one foot in the quarter-finals after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley in the first leg of a Round of 16 tie.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have to travel to Germany for the return leg, but are in complete control and have been in excellent form in 2019.

The North London club are still in the Premier League title hunt and are chasing a European fairytale to.

Sly Sports pundit Merson has shared that he believes Spurs can go all the way in the Champions League this year and that team will fear drawing them in the next round if they progress.

“What Tottenham did this week in the Champions League was unreal – and they definitely have the potential to win it now,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

“Now they’re virtually in the quarter-finals and they have players coming back, including one of the best strikers in the world in Harry Kane. No-one will want to play them.”

TBR’s View:

Spurs certainly are dark horses now for this year’s Champions League competition, but it’s hard to see them as genuine contenders.

They managed to outclass Dortmund in midweek, but there are still teams in the competition with far more European pedigree such as Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid.

On their day Pochettino’s side have the quality to challenge anyone and with a slice of luck could go deep into the Champions League, but in truth the European elite would love the possibility of playing still a fairly inexperienced Spurs in a semi-final scenario.

Spurs fans should continue dreaming in Europe, but it will be intriguing to see if they can keep pace with the top two of the Premier League and perhaps even close the gap to them.
