Tottenham Hotspur attacker Gareth Bale probably wouldn’t get into West Ham’s team to face Spurs as things stand, according to Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
Much was expected from the Wales international after he rejoined Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid in September.
In October, Jose Mourinho spoke highly of Bale, telling Sky Sports: “His behaviour as a team guy is incredible, his behaviour as a Tottenham guy is remarkable and he is coming.”

However, the 31-year-old’s high-profile return to Spurs hasn’t quite been smooth sailing amid injury and fitness issues, as well as rumoured question marks over his application.
Bale did put in a much-improved performance in Thursday’s Europa League last-32 first leg against Wolfsberger.
The Welshman provided the assist for Son Heung-min’s opener with a fine cross and offered a timely reminder of his quality with a superb turn and goal.
Despite looking like he’s finally on the right track, Merson still doesn’t seem convinced.
“I was a big fan of Gareth Bale,” he said on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (20 February, 1:37pm).
“I’ll ask the question: Would he play for West Ham tomorrow if he was at West Ham? I don’t think he would get into the West Ham team tomorrow.
“It’s horses for courses. We were all good players but times change.”
TBR View:
Quite a bold statement from Merson, particularly in wake of Bale’s great performance in midweek.
Bale has had a tough time this season, but there’s plenty of football yet to be played this season and if he continues on the same path, he should come good.
