Manchester United are about to face the toughest test of their season so far – Liverpool at Anfield.
Ruben Amorim had a decent start to life at Old Trafford after he was appointed as the new Red Devils boss. He was unbeaten in his first three games in charge, winning two of them.
However, since then, Manchester United have lost six of their eight games, including each of their last four fixtures in all competitions.
That is not good at all, and many people feel United are about to get battered by Liverpool when they face each other this Sunday.
Paul Merson suggests only Andre Onana can save Manchester United vs Liverpool
Andre Onana’s time at Manchester United has been a mixed one.
The Cameroonian has made a few howlers in goal for the Red Devils, but his performances this season have improved significantly.
However, he has conceded seven goals in his last three games, and the last team you would want to face during such a run is Liverpool, who have scored 14 in their last three.
A lot of people in the footballing world feel that United will be humiliated by Liverpool at Anfield, and Paul Merson is expecting a big win for Arne Slot’s side as well – unless one Manchester United player can produce an ‘absolute blinder’ of a performance.
The pundit has suggested that the only chance United have of getting anything from the game is if Onana steps up and keeps a clean sheet.
Merson wrote on Sportskeeda: “I just can’t see United getting anything from this game. I also think it’s inappropriate for Amorim to be saying they are close to a relegation battle. He needs to adapt quickly to the Premier League.
“Unless Andre Onana has an absolute blinder, Manchester United have no chance in this game.”

The last six games between Manchester United and Liverpool
Liverpool vs Manchester United is one of the most iconic fixtures in the history of English football.
The two clubs have been involved in some great battles over the years, but Liverpool have been the more successful team in recent seasons.
However, in the last six games between the two sides, the results have been even.
| Date | Result | Competition |
| September 1, 2024 | Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool | Premier League |
| April 7, 2024 | Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool | Premier League |
| March 17, 2024 | Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool | FA Cup |
| December 17, 2023 | Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United | Premier League |
| March 5, 2023 | Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United | Premier League |
| August 22, 2022 | Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool | Premier League |
As the table above shows, Liverpool and Manchester United have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games against each other.
We’re sure United would take a draw at Anfield this weekend – they achieved that under Erik ten Hag back in December 2023.
However, it will be extremely difficult to get anything from the game as Liverpool really are flying in the Premier League this season.
