Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Mikel Arteta will know which players he will want to offload this summer, but suggested that the Arsenal squad will likely be unaware as to who may be moved on.
After a quiet January window, it looks set to potentially be a busy summer at the Emirates. Arsenal are unbeaten in all competitions since the turn of the year, but they sit ninth in the Premier League and have only won two games away from home all season.
There have been warning signs during their recent unbeaten run, including during Sunday’s 3-2 win over Everton.
And Merson has suggested that some of those who have featured prominently under the new Gunners boss may be on the move this summer – and potentially oblivious to the idea that their futures will lie elsewhere.
“Arteta will know what he needs to change next season,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s pointless coming in, going mad at players now, and then all of a sudden needing those players if others get injured. The players he’ll want to get rid of don’t need to know that right now. There will be some personnel changes in the summer.”
TBR View – Some Arsenal players silencing critics under Arteta
In fairness, several players seem to have stepped up since Arteta was appointed. The likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka came in for a lot of criticism during Unai Emery’s tenure.
They, along with a few others, have further points to prove before all of their critics are silenced. But they have been excellent under Arteta.
So it will be interesting to see whether anyone can change Arteta’s mind over the coming months if the situation is as Merson describes.
Arsenal do not tend to be amongst the biggest spenders in the transfer market. So that may also prove to be a factor in what Arteta can do when the window opens.
