Paul Merson slams Arsenal for 'lazy' Odegaard and Ramsdale signings
Paul Merson believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could pay the ultimate price after signing both Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale yesterday.
The Gunners completed deals for both players for around £30m each. Odegaard rejoined after a good loan spell, while Ramsdale made the move to London following relegation with Sheffield United.
It took Arsenal’s summer spending to over £100m, with the likes of Ben White, Albert Lokonga, and Nuno Tavares also having signed for the club.
However, there remains question marks over whether Arteta has actually improved the first XI at all. And Sky Sports regular Merson, writing for the Daily Star, believes both the new signings point to ‘lazy’ recruitment.
“I think it’s a mistake. I think it’s another lazy signing. No other Premier League team was going for him,” Merson said on Odegaard.
“No-one else is trying to sign Aaron Ramsdale either – and he’s let in 125 goals in two seasons in the Premier League! I don’t know who’s picking these players. I wonder if it really is Arteta. But whoever it is, it will be Arteta paying the price if it all goes wrong.”
TBR’s View: Merson has a point…but both are good players in their own right
The issue Arsenal have got is they’ve signed a team for the future really this summer. Only Ben White is probably going to immediately play, although Odegaard will get a lot of chances too.
Merson goes on to mention how Emile Smith Rowe might be impacted by Odegaard’s arrival and he makes a great point there. Smith Rowe was the shining light against Brentford. But he might find himself pushed wide now.
Time will tell here. Ramsdale and Odegaard are both good players. But Arteta might not get the time to see it all through, which is where the big risk lies.
