Arsenal and Liverpool are expected to be in the running for the Premier League title once again this season.

The Gunners and the Reds contested one of the most exciting title races in recent years last season along with eventual winners Manchester City.

Arsenal have since bolstered their ranks further as Mikel Arteta looks to incrementally improve his team with each passing season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have a strong squad – though they’re yet to sign anyone this summer – and Arne Slot will hope to get off to a flyer in his maiden season at Anfield.

In addition, both the Gunners and the Reds have strong front lines that can get plenty of goals.

Paul Merson has now spoken about the respective attacking setups of Arsenal and Liverpool, predicting which one he thinks will be more prolific.

Paul Merson backs Liverpool to outscore Arsenal as Gabriel Martinelli unlikely to hit purple patch

Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, has said he thinks the front five at Anfield will score more than the Gunners this season.

He also singled Arsenal forwards Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard out in his discussion.

Merson said he doesn’t think the former will get 15 Premier League goals, while a 10-goal haul for the latter would be great.

“What I love about Liverpool is that they always have goals in them,” said Merson.

“They still have Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, who enjoyed a brilliant Euro 2024.

“I definitely think they’ll be up there alongside Manchester City and Arsenal in the title race.

“When I compare them with Arsenal, I don’t think Martinelli will score 15 league goals this term and I think it would be great if Leandro Trossard can get at least 10 goals.

“But that’s not a problem with Liverpool, I think the Reds’ front five will score more than Arsenal in my opinion.”

How Martinelli and Trossard compare from 2023/24 season

Martinelli didn’t have a great season last time out, registering just six goals and four assists in the Premier League.

He did also bag two goals and an assist in the Champions League, but nevertheless, eight goals and five assists from 44 outings isn’t a great return.

Martinelli is an “amazing” talent, as Thierry Henry has said, and it would be good to see him get back to his best this season.

Meanwhile, Trossard registered 12 goals and one assist in the league last season, along with four goals and one assist in the Champions League.

In addition, he did so with less game time. He played a total of 2,263 minutes last season, compared to 2,640 for Martinelli.
