Paul Merson says Tottenham have an 'underrated' star that is just as good as £65m Liverpool mainstay
Paul Merson has told 90Min’s YouTube that he believes Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris is underrated – comparing him to Alisson and Ederson.
Lloris, 34, has been sensational for Tottenham. The Spurs and France skipper is in his 10th season at Spurs, having joined from Lyon in 2012.
He is expected to surpass a huge 400 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions this season, having clocked up a huge 378 already.
In that time, Spurs have clocked up 129 clean sheets – around about a clean sheet every three games. Lloris has conceded 422 goals in that time.
Arsenal icon Merson, ahead of the North London derby, picked Lloris ahead of Leno in a combined XI – saying he is just as good as Alisson or Ederson.
“No, I’m with you. He’s a World Cup winner,” Merson said. “I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves, I think he’s very underrated.
“They don’t talk about him in the same bracket as Ederson, or Alisson, but for me I think he is a top goalie and he makes big saves.”
Merson on Lloris: Tottenham star on a par with Alisson and Ederson?
Alisson and Ederson are in a league of their own. Liverpool’s £65million (Guardian) signing Alisson transformed the side when joining from Roma.
Ederson, meanwhile, is like a third centre-back at Manchester City. The duo are the best in the Premier League and probably the best in Europe.
But of the next best, there is David De Gea, Edouard Mendy, Jordan Pickford, Kasper Schmeichel – and Lloris has to be in that mix.
The difference between Lloris, and Ederson and Alisson, is that Lloris is nowhere near as good with the ball at his feet. He is adept.
But Ederson and Alisson could play outfield. Lloris, certainly not. That is where the difference between the trio lies.
