Paul Merson says Tottenham are 'nowhere near good enough' in key position for Antonio Conte

Paul Merson has criticised the quality of Tottenham’s options at wing-back ahead of the north London derby.

Antonio Conte has Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic to choose from on the left of his back five, the latter of whom he signed in the summer.

On the right, he has another summer signing in Djed Spence, as well as Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, but still wants Pedro Porro in that role this month.

Merson told Sky Sports that those options are not good enough in such a key position for the three-man backline Conte wants to play.

Merson on Tottenham not being good enough at wing-back

He said: “When I watch Tottenham, one of the biggest problems I see is that they have no guile in midfield.

“On top of that, their wing-backs are nowhere near good enough to play in Antonio Conte’s system.

“If you look at Chelsea, their major successes in recent years have been because they’ve had very, very good wing-backs.

“If you are going to play three at the back, your wing-backs have got to be very good, but Tottenham’s aren’t, and they just don’t get the ball forward enough.”

Some Spurs fans may disagree with Merson and claim that Perisic has been a good signing, but he is more in the twilight of his career.

Right wing-back is a serious problem that Conte and his two predecessors have all brought in players to try and fix, but the quality is still not there.

Porro could be the answer, but there was excitement about Spence in the summer before he came in and he has barely played under Conte.
