Paul Merson says several clubs ‘kicking themselves’ they didn’t get West Ham player

Paul Merson says several teams will be “kicking themselves” after missing out on Jesse Lingard, who has joined West Ham United on loan.

The Hammers recruited the Manchester United ace and England international last week.

Lingard made an instant impact on his debut in claret and blue, netting twice en route to a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was only making his first league appearance of the season, so he would’ve been forgiven had he looked rusty.

That wasn’t the case at all, with Lingard shining from the off as he bagged a brace and looked impressive throughout the game.

Lingard has enjoyed a fruitful career at Man United over the years, clocking up over 200 competitive appearances for his boyhood club.

However, he has barely featured for his parent club this season, with just three appearances under his belt – and none in the Premier League or Champions League.

“He was a great signing for West Ham,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star. “He brings them guile and pace – and he scored twice on his debut.

“To be honest I expect the keeper to save both of those shots, but I’m pleased for him. He’s been through a lot.

“He’s not played for a long time. But I can remember when he was in the first team every week and playing for England.

“There will be a few teams kicking themselves they didn’t get him. But he suits West Ham. They should try and sign him in the summer.”

Lingard is very much the man of the moment following his superb debut for West Ham, in which he showed just what he’s capable of doing when entrusted with game time.

The Hammers are flying high in the league and Lingard’s arrival, followed by his impressive showing against Villa, really bodes well for the remainder of the campaign.
