Paul Merson says Leicester’s top six hopes are all but over if Jamie Vardy gets injured

Paul Merson says that Leicester’s top six hopes are overly reliant on Jamie Vardy staying fit for the duration of the season.

As per Sky Sports, Merson rates Brendan Rodgers but feels it is a big ask for the Foxes to break into that top six and that will get tougher if Vardy gets injured.

He said: “There will be a lot of clubs thinking they missed a trick not trying to get Brendan Rodgers in, he’s very good. It’s going to be hard for Leicester to break into the top six. Jamie Vardy is going to have to play every game, but if he gets injured who will come in? That’s the problem over a 38-game season, a major problem.

“There is a long way to go. The teams you are asking to finish in the top six – Leicester and West Ham – it is a big ask for them. Certain players have to stay fit for them. The cream always comes to the top – over 38 games, you are asking Leicester and West Ham to do something special.”

TBR’s View – No European football helps keep Vardy in prime condition

Just like when they won the Premier League, Leicester have a big advantage in terms of freshness because they are not playing European football.

Their other contenders for the top six, West Ham aside, are – for the time being – playing European football of some description.

Leicester aren’t – and that allows them to play at full speed every week and helps keep the ageing Vardy at the top of his game.

Injuries can happen to any player but his fitness record has been outstanding since his burst to prominence.
