Paul Merson says Harry Kane could leave Tottenham if Arsenal win NLD

Paul Merson has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane will consider leaving the club if Arsenal win the North London Derby on Sunday.

Spurs are fifth in the Premier League table at the moment – 11 points behind league leaders Arsenal despite playing a game more than Mikel Arteta’s side. That’s a really painful sight for Tottenham fans, but a win tomorrow will definitely lighten up the mood.

If they lose, however, things could get ugly, and Merson thinks Kane’s mind could be made up.

It’s another season for Tottenham fans where it looks like they will not be winning any trophies.

Yes, they’re still in the Premier League and Champions League, but let’s be honest, they aren’t winning either. The FA Cup is a more realistic option, but with a bunch of big teams still left in the competition, that’s easier said than done too.

Lack of trophies is a serious concern for Spurs – especially when it comes to negotiations with Kane about a new contract at the end of this season.

Merson believes the derby on Sunday against Arsenal could be the deciding factor.

He wrote in his column on The Daily Star: “Despite all the talk about Arsenal and the Premier League title, this feels like a decisive game for Tottenham and Harry Kane.

“If Arsenal go and beat Spurs, Kane will be slumped there wondering ‘do I really sit here for the rest of my career and risk winning nothing?’

“This is a huge game for him because he could equal or surpass Jimmy Greaves’ goalscoring record and if Tottenham win this, everything feels rosy again having dented Arsenal’s title hopes.A defeat would leave Kane scratching his head, thinking ‘even our arch-rivals have gone clear of us – what am I doing here?’

“Everyone is looking for a centre-forward and the only buyable striker right now is Kane. Both sides have to win.”

Even though Tottenham are in touching distance of the top four, they have been really poor this season.

Kane’s ‘incredible‘ record of 15 goals in 18 Premier League games this term is the biggest reason why they are where they are. Without him, Spurs would probably be alongside Chelsea, which just shows how important he is.

If Spurs don’t improve in the second half of the season, there’s a huge chance that Kane will want to leave. He will have just a year left on his contract this summer, and we’re sure plenty of clubs would love to sign him.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming months, but if Daniel Levy does not get this sorted soon, he could be forced to sell Kane in the summer.
