Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has what it takes to manage at the Emirates Stadium.
The pundit told Sky Sports that Wilder also deserves the Manager of the Year award if he guides the Blades into Europe, regardless of what Jurgen Klopp does.
He said: “If Chris Wilder gets Sheffield United into Europe, he deserves Manager of the Year for me. You’ve got to work out what you’re working with, and they were one of the favourites to get relegated – but at the moment, phenomenal.
“It’s not a fluke – when Chris Wilder was at Northampton and Oxford, he’s performed miracles everywhere he’s been. I watched Sheffield United play Arsenal at home earlier this season, and thinking ‘how is this man not manager of Arsenal?'”
TBR’s View – Wilder is the hottest manager in the country right now
Wilder has shown this season he’s got the lot; tactical innovations, attractive football, and a constant desire to improve.
Any club in the country could use that and Wilder should prove himself more than capable of managing in European football should Sheffield United get there.
If Liverpool win the Premier League going the season unbeaten, Klopp will likely win the award at the end of the season.
But if Wilder can get Sheffield United into Europe – finishing higher than the 7th place Wolves managed last term fresh from the Championship – he would be a very close second.
