'Better than all the others': Sky Sports pundit claims Newcastle have a player who only Harry Kane is better than
Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson, has made a bold claim regarding Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson today.
Wilson has been out injured for the Magpies but is expected to come back fit and firing for next season, where he’ll be keen to show Eddie Howe he’s the number nine they need at St James’ Park. Wilson has scored six goals in 16 games for Newcastle this season despite his injury, and recently returned off the bench against Man City.
And speaking on Sky Sports earlier today, Paul Merson believes that if Wilson comes back scoring goals next season, then he’ll be second in line behind Harry Kane to go to Qatar with England.
“If Callum Wilson comes back firing at the start of next season, I think he goes to the World Cup. I think he’s got international movement. I think his movement, as a centre-forward, is better than all the others. Barring Harry Kane, but he’s better than all the others,” Merson said on Sky Sports earlier.
The World Cup is set to throw a lot of different spanners into the works given it is in December. That could mean we see some players in an early season purple patch get the nod, something Jeff Stelling touches on after Merson’s comments here.
Wilson has one goal for England in four caps, and will be keen to get back among the squad when back fully fit.
TBR’s View: Callum Wilson For England Not A Bad Shout From Merson
Merson makes a good point here you know. Callum Wilson is as good as anyone else when fit in terms of back up to Harry Kane with England.
Other forwards like Calvert-Lewin, Rashford and more haven’t put a marker down this season, so it really is game on.
If Wilson can score goals for Newcastle, then Gareth Southgate might be left with no choice here.
