Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that no club in the world will want to sign Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The striker has hit the headlines, after being axed from Saturday’s win over Southampton.

Aubameyang, 32, was allowed time off last week for personal reasons. But a return time had been agreed, and it is believed that he was late – which prompted Mikel Arteta to drop him from the squad completely.

Of course, it is not the first time. Last season, Aubameyang was late for the team coach and was left on the bench for the North London derby. Arteta spoke publicly after the 3-0 win, criticising Aubameyang.

The obvious reaction from the footballing world to that, is that Aubameyang’s place at Arsenal is in doubt – and certainly, his captaincy. Martin Keown questioned whether it could be removed mid-season.

Discussing the player’s future, Arsenal legend Merson does not believe a single club in the world would want Aubameyang right now. That is, due to his enormous £250,000-a-week wages (Times).

“It’s a major problem for Arsenal. Who’s going to take him on those wages? Absolutely nobody in the whole wide world. If he was 27, they’d be queuing up around the corner for him, but not at 32,” Merson said.

Merson on Aubameyang: Is there really no clubs eyeing Arsenal man?

Merson makes a good point. Aubameyang’s form is dwindling, regardless of his lack of discipline. He has scored just four goals in 14 Premier League games, hardly proving value for money.

He is not worth his wages. While many clubs can afford the ludicrous salary of £250,000 a week, who would want to pay that for a striker who is clearly entering the twilight years of his career?

A move to Italy, to an Inter Milan, could be a potential avenue. Barcelona have been linked, PSG have the money. But these clubs are likely to think there is better out there than Aubameyang.
