Paul Merson reacts as Christian Eriksen is reportedly close to Tottenham exit

Paul Merson is “shocked” that Tottenham look set to allow Christian Eriksen’s exit from the club this month.

Sky Sports reports that the 27-year-old arrived in Italy on Monday for a medical and that’s he closing in on a move to Serie A side Inter Milan.

It is understood that he’s set to complete a £16.8million switch and may earn a huge £320,000-a-week deal.

He’s played 28 games this season for Spurs in all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying three assists in return.

But the attacking midfielder has been colossal since his move to North London in 2013 and may now leave a big gap in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Merson has claimed that Spurs will be left with a real problem in terms of trying to get into the top four if Eriksen does complete his transfer.

They are currently six points off the top four in the Premier League table as it stands.

“I’m quite shocked. For Tottenham to sell Christian Eriksen for £17m… that’s a cup of tea in the foof team quite shocked. For Tottenham to sell Christian Eriksen for £17million… that’s a cup of tea in the football world in this day and age!” Merson said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“Tottenham need to get into the top four. They’re in a new stadium, they’ve brought Jose Mourinho in… I’d be shocked if they were able to replace Eriksen in four days. And if they don’t replace him, I don’t see them getting in.

“I know he hasn’t been pulling up trees – and I know he’s had a bit of stick recently from the fans – but they haven’t got anyone better. If I was Jose, I would have been saying, sort yourself out and stay.”

TBR’s View:

With Eriksen’s contract expiring at the end of the season, a move away from Spurs is no surprise and he’s been heavily linked with an exit this month.

It does seem like the Danish playmaker has reached a natural end on his time with the club and he’s given so many highlights.

Giovani Lo Celso is a player really beginning to come into his own now in a Spurs shirt and he may be the ideal creator to replace Eriksen.
