Paul Merson raved about reported Tottenham target Said Benrahma earlier in the season

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Brentford attacker Said Benrahma, who earned rave reviews earlier in the season from Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

The Mirror has claimed that Spurs are one of the teams keen on signing the dazzling winger alongside West Ham, Leeds United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Arsenal.

It is understood that Jose Mourinho’s side could be interested in trying to land the Algerian for around £16million despite Brentford’s £25million price tag, with the Championship club now on the back foot after losing in the play-off final.

Benrahma, 24, was a standout performer with 17 goals and 10 assists in 46 appearances for Brentford during the most recent season, but he couldn’t quite them over the line for promotion.

He is a tricky left-winger renowned for his close ball control and willingness to take players on one-on-one, something he’s done with ease in the Championship.

Merson was majorly impressed by the Brentford wide man earlier in the year and picked him out as a key performer.

“I thought he (Benrahma) was really, really good. Very skilful player,” Merson said on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme after Brentford’s 3-2 win over Middlesbrough (5:15pm, 18 February, 2020).

“He’s one of them players that will get bums off seats. Great skill. He got two nutmegs on one player in the space of a few seconds. Good player!”

TBR’s View:

Benrahma’s eye-catching performances this season haven’t gone unnoticed and it will be no big surprise to see him showing his individual talent next year in the Premier League, with a host of Premier League teams keen.

He’s a showman that doesn’t appear to fit the Jose Mourinho mould on paper, but would bring some extra creative flair in the final third and is effective if he’s got defensive cover behind him.

Benrahma may find it much easier to break into a team elsewhere in the league, as Spurs already have some top-class talents occupying the wide positions.
