Paul Merson proved wrong over Arsenal capture of Willian
Arsenal secured the signing of Willian in August 2020 and Paul Merson thought the Gunners had completed a real coup during the summer transfer window.
Fast forward, nine months and his prediction at the time has fallen on its backside, with the Brazilian vastly underwhelming.
Willian is on the back of arguably his worst season in England, having scored just one goal and registered seven assists.
Yesterday, Sky Sports claimed that he was pushing to leave Arsenal – and even fancies a return to Stamford Bridge!
Willian’s nightmare campaign has made a mockery of poor, old Merson who backed him to be a roaring success in August.
He told the Daily Star: “Willian will be an unbelievable signing for Arsenal. I think Willian is a special player who ticks all the boxes. I can’t believe Chelsea are letting him go if I’m honest.”
On the face of things, the Brazilian should have been a good signing. He arrived having won two league titles at Chelsea and made 339 appearances for the Blues.
His five Premier League assists at Arsenal make for some flawed reading. He claimed three in the opening day win over Fulham, making just two during his other 24 outings.
Is Willian on borrowed time?
It has to be said that he probably is and if Arsenal can offload him it’d be in the best interest of all parties.
Merson wouldn’t have been the only person to praise the capture of such a proven Premier League player last summer.
For whatever reason, it just hasn’t worked out and Willian has regressed during the 2020/21 campaign.
The 32-year-old is unlikely to rediscover his very best form and thankfully the Gunners did manage to land him on a free.
Merson does make a lot of good points during his role as a pundit on Sky Sports. When it comes to his Willian prediction, however, he got it badly wrong.
