Paul Merson predicts who’ll win between Newcastle and Tottenham this weekend

Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend, with a lot at stake for both teams.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies will take on Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs in Saturday’s early kick-off at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are currently eighth in the Premier League table and 13 points adrift of fifth-placed Aston Villa.

However, there’s a decent chance that sixth and seventh could be enough for Europa League qualification this season.

Meanwhile, fourth-placed Tottenham are level on points with the Villans, albeit with a slightly better goal difference.

A Champions League spot would be a huge boost for a Spurs team that has improved massively since Ange Postecoglou took the reins last summer.

Paul Merson, who provides Premier League pre-match predictions each week, has now shared who he thinks will win between Newcastle and Tottenham.

Who does Paul Merson think will win between Newcastle and Spurs?

The pundit, writing on Sportskeeda, believes Newcastle will have the edge over Tottenham, predicting a 2-1 home win.

“Newcastle United got a great result against Fulham but I can’t recall them playing particularly well,” wrote Merson.

“Tottenham, on the other hand, were outstanding against Nottingham Forest.

“At St. James’ Park, I fancy Newcastle, so I’m going for a 2-1 home win.

“Tottenham need the points and have a bit of a nightmare run coming up, but I doubt they lose to Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City.

“There is a result for them in that run somewhere, so I think they’ll be safe and finish above Aston Villa in the Premier League top four.”

Newcastle v Tottenham prediction

Both Newcastle and Tottenham have been great on the attacking front this season, but they’ve also shipped a fair few goals.

With that in mind, the logical prediction would be a high-scoring draw, but at the same time, Newcastle’s lengthy injury list could prove costly.

In addition, Tottenham will be especially desperate to cement their fourth-placed spot, so predict a 2-1 win for Spurs.
