Paul Merson predicts where Tottenham can finish under Jose Mourinho next season

Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur can finish in the top four of the Premier League next season under Jose Mourinho – if the board give him the backing to improve the side.

Tottenham are still in with a shout of finishing in the top six this season but they have got to beat Crystal Palace away from home on Sunday afternoon, and hope Wolves fail to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho has certainly improved a stuttering Tottenham side that were failing to mirror their best form under Mauricio Pochettino earlier in the season. But Daniel Levy’s tight stronghold on the Spurs coffers remains.

Arsenal legend Merson is confident that if the Tottenham players buy into Mourinho’s way of playing, then Tottenham have a chance of returning to the top four of the Premier League – given that Mourinho is one of the best.

“There’s one thing I agree on with Mourinho, and it’s that he is one of the top managers in the world, and you have to listen. I think the players will buy into it. If they do, Spurs have every chance of finishing in the top four next season.”

TBR’s view – What do Tottenham need this summer?

Firstly, a new right-back. Serge Aurier is great going forward, but a liability at the back. A replacement at centre-back for Jan Vertonghen, and cover or a better option than Ben Davies on the left side of defence.

Steel in midfield – perhaps Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – and back up for Harry Kane. A replacement for Christian Eriksen should also be considered by the north London club in the coming weeks. Plenty of work to do, then.
