Paul Merson praises Miguel Almiron after brilliant Newcastle United form
Paul Merson has told Sportskeeda that he’s been blown away by Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron’s work-rate this season.
Eddie Howe’s side are flying high at the moment. They are currently sitting third in the Premier League table while they also booked their place in their first cup semi-final since 2005 on Tuesday night.
While Newcastle have been putting in some brilliant team performances, they’ve been helped by some standout displays from some of their key players.
One of these players has undoubtedly been Almiron – who’s been in inspired form this season after struggling to make a real impact at St James’ Park beforehand.
The 28-year-old has netted nine times and provided one assist in the Premier League already this season. But it’s his work-rate off the ball that has left an impression on Arsenal legend Paul Merson.
Merson blown away by Almiron
Merson has given his predictions to Sportskeeda for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
The pundit has predicted that Howe’s men will beat Fulham 2-0 this weekend and continue their assault on the top four.
But he also singled out Almiron for praise after his performances for Newcastle this season.
“Newcastle have been going along very nicely. They don’t concede a goal even when they don’t play well – their defence is brilliant. Miguel Almiron’s been outstanding, and he’s working very hard,” he said.
“Fulham have also been excellent and if they win their next two Premier League games, they’ll be only one point behind Newcastle. That just shows that when you get two quick games and you can get six points, it’s a big deal.
“Everything that Newcastle have done has worked so far, and everybody’s been an eight on ten for them. They’ve got good fixtures coming up, and I think they should be able to win this game.”
It’s been some turnaround in fortunes for Almiron this season. He’d only managed eight Premier League goals in total for the club before the beginning of the campaign.
Now, he’s already bested that total in the space of a few months and the £20 million Newcastle paid for him back in 2019 is starting to look like a real steal.
His upturn in form has to partly go down to Howe, with the Englishman favouring a more attacking approach in comparison to the likes of Steve Bruce and Rafa Benitez.
But Newcastle fans will be hoping the Paraguayan forward can continue his brilliant form and help the Magpies maintain their position at the top end of the table.
